Marquette, MI – 08/30/2011 – Department of Natural Resources Fire Control responded to a small brush fire burning on the north side of Sugarloaf Mountain in Marquette County, right before the entrance to Wetmore Landing. The fire was reported at approximately 7:15 last night and is estimated to be about 3 acres in size. Fire fighters on the scene are working to establish a fire line today and hold the fire to its current size. It is primarily burning through brush and rocky terrain, affecting the occasional tree. DNR officials say smoke is visible from the city of Marquette and surrounding areas. Drivers are asked to use caution when traveling in the area of County Road 550 and the parking areas near Sugarloaf. Some smoke is drifting across County Road 550, and as night falls, thicker smoke could cause visibility issues.
